Because We Said So

If you have kids or, at one time, were a kid, you’ve probably heard this phrase before. It usually follows attempts at reason, persuasion and maybe even a few threats. Finally, in a fit of frustration, out it pops. “Do it because I said so!”

 

We’ve reached that point with Congress and the White House. Nothing is more critical to our nation’s future than dealing with our fiscal problems but Congress seems unwilling to get serious. They can see the crisis as easily as we can but they either lack the political will to do anything about it or they see political advantage in leaving the problems unsolved.

 

Frankly, we’re tired of just hearing about fiscal responsibility. It’s time to actually be fiscally responsible. Congress needs to pass serious reform legislation now but they won’t without pressure from the American public. Unlike other special interest groups, we’re not going to tell our elected leaders what reform should look like – that’s their job. But we do believe that any serious reform effort will tackle all four key fiscal components: annual deficits, the national debt, spending reform and tax reform.

 

Unfortunately, if you suggest spending reform, the Democrats will say you hate old people. And if you even think about raising taxes, the Republicans will call your mama a Socialist. Instead of working together, each side is playing politics with the issue. This has to stop!

 

As Americans, we’re all in this together. Our elected officials should know that they’re all in it together too. Let your representatives know that you’re serious about fiscal reform and you expect them to be serious about it too.

 

Tell them to stop behaving like children and do what we (the people) say or, come their next election, they’re gonna get a whuppin. Why? Because we said so!
